Succeeds Lt Gen P K Mishra; new Corps Commander stresses operational readiness, professional excellence and team spirit

JAMMU, October 1: Lieutenant General Mohit Seth, SM, VSM, on Thursday assumed command of the strategically important White Knight Corps (XVI Corps) at Nagrota in Jammu, succeeding Lieutenant General P K Mishra, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM.

The change of command comes at a significant time for the Jammu region, where the White Knight Corps is responsible for military operations along the Line of Control (LoC) as well as the hinterland. The formation plays a key role in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across several districts of the Jammu region.

Lt Gen Mohit Seth Assumes Command

Following the formal change of command, Lt Gen Mohit Seth called upon all ranks of the formation to maintain the highest standards of operational readiness, professional excellence and team spirit.

He also emphasised the continued role of the Corps in contributing towards peace, security and stability in the region.

The White Knight Corps, in a post following the change of command, said:

“Prepared For Today, Ready For Tomorrow. We Serve, We Protect.”

The message underlines the formation’s focus on maintaining operational preparedness while continuing its responsibilities across the Jammu theatre.

White Knight Corps: A Key Formation in Jammu

The White Knight Corps, also known as XVI Corps, is headquartered at Nagrota in Jammu.

Its area of responsibility covers the Jammu region, including areas along the LoC and the hinterland. Earlier reports on the command structure have described its operational area as extending south of the Pir Panjal range towards the plains of Jammu and Akhnoor.

The Corps has a particularly important role in maintaining security along the LoC and conducting counter-terrorism operations in areas including Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch, as well as parts of the wider Jammu theatre.

Its responsibilities require close coordination between Army formations, intelligence agencies, police and other security forces operating in the region.

Experienced Command for a Sensitive Theatre

Lt Gen Mohit Seth comes to the White Knight Corps after serving in several important command and staff appointments.

Before taking over the formation, he was serving as Commandant of the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) in Bhutan, the Indian Army’s military training establishment there.

He has also served as the General Officer Commanding of the Counter-Insurgency Force Kilo in Kashmir, an appointment that involved extensive operational responsibilities in the counter-insurgency environment.

Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the 3 Madras Regiment in 1991. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the National Defence College (NDC) and has also served as the Indian Army Liaison Officer at the High Commission of India in the United Kingdom.

His previous operational and staff appointments include experience in both field and training environments.

Lt Gen P K Mishra Moves to New Assignment

Lt Gen Mohit Seth succeeds Lt Gen P K Mishra, who had taken over as Commander of the White Knight Corps in April 2025, succeeding Lt Gen Navin Sachdeva.

Lt Gen Mishra is now moving to a new assignment.

During his tenure as Corps Commander, Lt Gen Mishra had repeatedly emphasised operational preparedness and the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.

His tenure also coincided with continued security operations and heightened focus on the LoC and counter-terrorism environment in the Jammu region.

Focus on Operational Readiness

The emphasis by the new Corps Commander on operational readiness comes as the Army continues to maintain a high level of preparedness across the Jammu theatre.

The region combines multiple security challenges, including the management of the LoC, counter-infiltration measures, counter-terrorism operations and protection of strategic areas and population centres.

The White Knight Corps operates alongside other Army formations and security agencies, with coordination playing an important role in responding to emerging threats.

Lt Gen Seth’s direction to maintain professional excellence and team spirit indicates a focus not only on combat preparedness but also on cohesion and coordinated functioning among troops.

Jammu Region Remains Strategically Important

The Jammu region occupies a critical position because of its proximity to the LoC and International Border and its connectivity with areas further north.

Districts such as Rajouri and Poonch have witnessed repeated counter-terrorism and security operations in recent years, making the area an important component of the Army’s broader northern security architecture.

The White Knight Corps’ responsibilities therefore extend beyond conventional border defence and include sustained counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism duties.

The Corps’ operational area also connects the security environment of the Jammu plains with the mountainous areas towards the Pir Panjal, requiring a combination of conventional military preparedness and specialised counter-insurgency capabilities.

Message of Peace Alongside Preparedness

While operational readiness remains a central responsibility, Lt Gen Seth’s message also highlighted the objective of maintaining peace, security and stability in the region.

The approach reflects the dual responsibilities of the formation — remaining prepared to respond to security threats while supporting a stable security environment across its area of responsibility.

The White Knight Corps’ message, “Prepared For Today, Ready For Tomorrow. We Serve, We Protect,” also reflects this emphasis on continuous preparedness.
