New Delhi, June 29: India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities have received a major boost with the commissioning of the BrahMos missile manufacturing facility in Lucknow, which has increased the country’s overall BrahMos missile production capacity by nearly 20 per cent. The new complex, now the largest BrahMos production facility in India, marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to expand missile production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative while supporting both domestic military requirements and growing export commitments.
The development comes at a time when demand for the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile continues to rise among the Indian Armed Forces as well as friendly foreign nations, making increased production capacity a strategic necessity.
First Batch Successfully Produced
According to BrahMos Aerospace Co-Director Alexander Maksichev, the Lucknow facility has already completed production of its first batch of BrahMos missiles, while manufacturing of the second batch is currently underway.
The commencement of serial production indicates that the plant has transitioned from the infrastructure development phase to full-scale operational manufacturing, significantly enhancing India’s ability to deliver missiles within shorter production cycles.
Largest BrahMos Manufacturing Complex
Located in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, the Lucknow facility has been developed as the country’s largest BrahMos manufacturing centre. The project forms a key component of the Defence Industrial Corridor envisioned to transform Uttar Pradesh into one of India’s major defence production hubs.
The facility is expected to manufacture various components of the BrahMos weapon system while also supporting integration, assembly, testing and quality assurance processes.
Officials believe the plant will play a crucial role in strengthening India’s defence industrial ecosystem by promoting indigenous manufacturing, generating employment and encouraging participation from the domestic private sector and MSMEs.
Four Production Facilities Now Operational
With the commissioning of the Lucknow complex, four BrahMos production facilities are now operational across India. The expanded manufacturing network is expected to improve production efficiency, reduce delivery timelines and ensure a steady supply of missiles for the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
The increased capacity is also expected to help BrahMos Aerospace meet future export orders as international interest in the missile system continues to grow.
BrahMos: India’s Premier Supersonic Cruise Missile
The BrahMos is one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles, capable of travelling at speeds of nearly Mach 2.8 to Mach 3. Jointly developed by India and Russia through BrahMos Aerospace, the missile can be launched from land-based launchers, naval warships, submarines and fighter aircraft, making it one of the most versatile precision-strike weapon systems currently in service.
Designed for high accuracy and rapid engagement, the missile is capable of striking land and maritime targets with precision while flying at low altitudes to evade enemy radar systems. Continuous upgrades have also extended its range and enhanced its operational capabilities.
Growing Export Demand
India has emerged as an important exporter of advanced defence equipment in recent years, with the BrahMos missile becoming one of its flagship defence exports. The Philippines became the first international customer to induct the BrahMos coastal defence missile system, while several other countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America have expressed interest in acquiring the weapon.
The increased production capacity is expected to strengthen India’s ability to meet export commitments while simultaneously fulfilling the operational requirements of its armed forces.
Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The operationalisation of the Lucknow BrahMos facility represents another significant achievement under the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Defence analysts believe the expansion will not only enhance India’s strategic deterrence but also reinforce its ambition of becoming a global defence manufacturing and export hub.
With production now underway at the country’s largest BrahMos manufacturing centre, India has taken another important step towards achieving greater self-reliance in advanced missile production while strengthening its position as a leading producer of high-end defence technologies.
