New Delhi, July 1: Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, AVSM, SM, on Tuesday assumed charge as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), becoming the second-highest-ranking officer in the Indian Army. An experienced infantry officer with nearly four decades of distinguished military service, Lt Gen Jain succeeds Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani and takes over at a crucial phase of the Army’s ongoing modernisation and operational transformation.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Lt Gen Jain was commissioned into the Mahar Regiment in June 1988 and has served across some of India’s most challenging operational theatres.
Extensive Operational Experience
Throughout his illustrious military career, Lt Gen Jain has commanded formations across a wide spectrum of operational environments.
His command appointments include:
- An Infantry Battalion in semi-desert terrain
- An Infantry Battalion deployed under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS)
- An Infantry Brigade in a Strike Corps
- A Counter-Insurgency Force
- A Pivot Corps in Northern Command
- A Corps in Northern Command
- General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command
These assignments have provided him with extensive expertise in conventional warfare, counter-insurgency operations, high-altitude deployments and multinational peacekeeping missions.
Veteran of Major Military Operations
Lt Gen Jain has participated in several important military operations during his career.
His operational experience includes:
- Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka
- Counter-insurgency operations along the Line of Control (LoC)
- Multiple operational tenures in the North East
- High-altitude deployments in sensitive border areas
- Service as a Military Observer with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia
- Command of a Sector Headquarters under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan
His wide-ranging experience reflects a career spanning both conventional military operations and international peacekeeping.
Leadership in Capability Development
Before taking over as Vice Chief, Lt Gen Jain served as Chief of Staff, Headquarters Southern Command, where he played an important role in enhancing operational preparedness, force restructuring and capability development.
He was subsequently appointed General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command, overseeing one of the Indian Army’s largest operational commands before moving to Army Headquarters as the Vice Chief.
