New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, July 14: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out coordinated searches at three locations in and around Bhubaneswar, Odisha, in connection with the Sundarpada bomb blast case of January 2026.
According to the NIA, the searches were conducted based on evidence collected during the investigation, including information obtained from one of the accused arrested in the case, along with other leads developed by the agency.
Background of the Case
The case pertains to an explosion that occurred on January 27, 2026, when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) accidentally detonated while it was allegedly being assembled by four individuals on the rooftop of a four-storey building in Azad Nagar Colony, Sundarpada, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
The blast left all four suspected bomb makers seriously injured and triggered a detailed investigation into the alleged bomb-making network.
Focus of the Searches
The NIA said Tuesday’s operation was aimed at tracing:
- The source of explosive materials used to assemble the bombs.
- The origin of components used in manufacturing the IEDs.
- The intended purpose and possible targets of the explosives.
- The financial trail and source of funds used to procure the materials.
Investigators are also examining whether the accused had links with any larger network involved in procuring explosives or planning unlawful activities.
Digital Devices Seized
During the searches, the NIA recovered:
- Several digital devices.
- Electronic storage media.
- Other incriminating materials believed to be relevant to the investigation.
The seized items have been sent for forensic examination to extract digital evidence and identify possible associates or communication links.
Case Taken Over by NIA
The case was initially registered by the Airfield Police Station, Bhubaneswar, before being handed over to the National Investigation Agency in April 2026 due to its potential national security implications.
The case is being investigated under RC-01/2026/NIA/BBSR.
Investigation Continues
The NIA said investigations are continuing to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the conspiracy and to determine the complete network behind the procurement, preparation and intended use of the explosive materials.
Officials indicated that further searches and arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.
