Jammu: In a major step towards strengthening India’s indigenous defence ecosystem, the Northern Command of the Indian Army and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop advanced defence technologies in support of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The strategic partnership aims to combine the operational expertise of the Indian Army with IIT Jammu’s research and innovation capabilities to develop mission-oriented solutions for emerging defence challenges.

The collaboration will leverage IIT Jammu’s academic excellence, scientific research and technological expertise to create innovative solutions in niche operational domains of the Indian Army.
The partnership is expected to accelerate indigenous research and development in critical defence technologies while promoting self-reliance in military capability development.
MoU Signed in Presence of Senior Military and Academic Leadership
The signing ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command.
The event was attended by:
- Lieutenant General P.K. Mishra, GOC, White Knight Corps.
- Prof. Manoj Singh Gaur, Director, IIT Jammu.
- Prof. Bacham Eswar Reddy, Dean (Administration & Operations).
- Prof. Durai Prabhakaran, Dean (Research & Consultancy).
- Senior Army officers, faculty members and students.
Address During NAVARAMBH’26
Speaking at NAVARAMBH’26, the inaugural foundation course at IIT Jammu, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma called upon researchers, faculty members and students to work closely with the Indian Army in developing technology-driven solutions for operational challenges.
He stressed the importance of transforming innovative ideas into practical defence applications that can enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.

The Army Commander said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment towards:
