New Delhi, August 14: The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and NIBE Private Limited for the procurement of Loiter Munition Systems for the Indian Army.
The contracts were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, marking another significant step towards strengthening the Army’s precision-strike and modern warfare capabilities.
Boost to Indian Army’s Precision-Strike Capability
Loitering munitions are advanced weapon systems capable of remaining airborne over a designated area, identifying or receiving a target, and delivering a precision strike when required.
Their combination of surveillance, target acquisition and strike capability makes them particularly relevant to modern battlefield environments, where forces increasingly require rapid, precise and flexible engagement options.
The procurement is expected to enhance the Indian Army’s ability to engage selected targets while improving its operational reach and responsiveness.
Strengthening Indigenous Defence Manufacturing
The contracts with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited also underline the government’s continued emphasis on indigenous defence production and Aatmanirbharta.
Increasing procurement from Indian defence companies is aimed at building domestic manufacturing capacity, developing specialised technologies and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical military systems.
The deal further reflects the expanding role of India’s private defence industry in supplying advanced equipment to the Armed Forces.
Focus on Future-Ready Warfare
The induction of loiter munition systems comes amid the Indian military’s broader effort to adapt to rapidly changing patterns of warfare.
