New Delhi, August 19: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi in New Delhi on August 20, 2026, with the two sides expected to discuss ways to further strengthen defence and security cooperation.

The meeting is expected to focus on strategic trust, maritime security, defence technology and equipment cooperation, while also exploring new avenues for collaboration between the two countries.

⚓ Focus on Maritime Security

A key area of discussion will be deeper maritime security cooperation, reflecting the shared strategic interests of India and Japan in maintaining a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific.

Both sides are expected to explore ways to enhance cooperation between their defence forces and strengthen coordination across the maritime domain.

🛠️ Push for Defence Technology Cooperation

The two ministers are also expected to discuss closer collaboration in defence equipment and technology under the Make-in-India framework.

The talks come after Japan’s revision of its Three Principles on Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology, potentially creating additional opportunities for defence-industrial cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting is expected to help develop a roadmap for expanding bilateral cooperation in emerging defence technologies and military equipment.

🇯🇵 Japanese Defence Minister Visits Western Naval Command

Ahead of his meeting with Rajnath Singh, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi visited the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on August 19 during his maiden visit to India.

He held discussions with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan.

The Japanese delegation received briefings on the Indian Navy’s roles, responsibilities and operational capabilities.

Koizumi also inspected a Guard of Honour after his arrival at the Western Naval Command and earlier laid a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard.

⚓ Visit to INS Chennai

The Japanese Defence Minister also visited the Indian Navy’s indigenous warship INS Chennai, providing an opportunity to view India’s growing indigenous naval capabilities.

The visit highlights the increasing importance of naval cooperation between India and Japan as both countries work towards strengthening maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.
