New Delhi, July 31: In a major boost to the Indian Army’s operational capabilities in high-altitude and snow-bound regions, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth on Friday launched the indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel in New Delhi.

Developed jointly by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), the specialised fuel is designed to ensure the reliable operation of combat and logistics vehicles in extreme weather conditions, while also supporting the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Designed for Extreme Cold Conditions

Conventional diesel tends to thicken and clog fuel filters in sub-zero temperatures, affecting the mobility and performance of military vehicles deployed in high-altitude areas.

The newly developed XWG Diesel overcomes this challenge by remaining fully operational at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for deployment in regions such as Ladakh, Siachen Glacier and other snow-bound sectors.

No Engine Modifications Required

Officials said the fuel is fully compliant with BS-VI emission norms and IS 1460:2025 specifications.

A major advantage of the new fuel is that it can be used across the Indian Army’s existing fleet of vehicles without any engine modification or re-homologation, allowing for seamless induction into service.

Army Chief Calls It a “Game-Changing” Innovation

Addressing the launch ceremony, General Dhiraj Seth described the indigenous fuel as a game-changing innovation that will significantly improve:

  • Operational mobility
  • Mission readiness
  • Reliability of military vehicles
  • Safety of troops deployed in extreme weather

He noted that the fuel would eliminate several temporary measures previously adopted to keep vehicles functional during harsh winters, thereby enhancing both operational efficiency and troop morale.

Developed Within One Year

The Army Chief commended the joint efforts of the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies for developing the specialised fuel within just one year.

He expressed confidence that the collaboration would pave the way for the development of more specialised fuels tailored to diverse operational requirements of the Armed Forces.

Benefits Beyond the Military

Apart from military applications, the technology is expected to benefit civilian users living in high-altitude and severe winter regions by improving the reliability and safety of vehicles and heavy equipment operating under extreme climatic conditions.

The launch of Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel marks another significant milestone in India’s drive towards indigenous defence technologies and self-reliance, while enhancing the operational preparedness of the Indian Army in some of the world’s most challenging terrains.
