Udhampur, August 24, 2026: The Army Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) marked its Diamond Jubilee with a grand celebration at Chinar Complex, Udhampur, reaffirming its longstanding commitment to the welfare, empowerment and well-being of women, children and families of the Armed Forces community.

The 60-year milestone was commemorated through a series of welfare, outreach and community initiatives, particularly focused on families associated with the Northern Command, where soldiers often serve in challenging and remote operational environments away from their loved ones.

Supporting families in challenging areas

Over the decades, AWWA has played an important role in supporting families who remain separated from serving personnel due to the demanding nature of military deployments.

One of the key initiatives highlighted during the celebrations was Project Milaap, which seeks to maintain a connection with families living in far-flung areas. Through digital outreach, the initiative helps families receive timely information about welfare measures, assistance programmes and support schemes available to them.

The initiative recognises the important role played by women in sustaining families while their spouses serve in demanding operational environments.

Veer Naris and Veer Matas honoured

A special focus of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations was placed on Veer Naris and Veer Matas, whose courage, dignity and resilience continue to inspire the Armed Forces community.

Women from Udhampur and remote areas were felicitated during the event in recognition of their strength and contribution. AWWA reiterated its commitment to supporting them through initiatives aimed at enhancing their well-being, dignity and self-reliance.

Focus on skills and financial independence

AWWA’s role has evolved significantly over its six-decade journey, expanding beyond traditional family welfare to include education, skill development, entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance.

In Northern Command, 18 Vocational Training Centres and six Army Skill Training Centres are providing women with opportunities to develop practical skills, pursue employment and explore avenues for financial independence.

These initiatives are aimed at creating sustainable opportunities for women and helping them become more confident and self-reliant.

Education and well-being of children

The organisation has also maintained a strong focus on the education and holistic development of children from Armed Forces families.

Beyond academics, the initiatives seek to encourage confidence, personality development and overall growth. AWWA also places emphasis on the physical and mental well-being of families, with support initiatives involving healthcare, counselling and other welfare measures.

Polaris Awards presented

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations culminated in a grand programme at Chinar Complex, Udhampur, where Mrs Shinei Sharma, Regional President AWWA, presented the Polaris Awards to outstanding beneficiaries.

Addressing members and beneficiaries, she encouraged continued participation in community welfare and nation-building initiatives.

The celebrations reflected the organisation’s six-decade journey while also highlighting its continuing relevance to the changing needs and aspirations of Armed Forces families.
