New Delhi: In a significant milestone for gender inclusion in the armed forces’ infrastructure arm, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has appointed two women officers to command key field formations, marking another step towards greater representation of women in leadership roles.
The appointments highlight the BRO’s commitment to excellence, professionalism and inclusive leadership in executing strategically important infrastructure projects across the country.
Col Sphurti Kulkarni Creates History
Colonel Sphurti Kulkarni assumed command of 45 Task Force, Project Chetak on 30 July 2026, becoming the first woman officer to lead the Task Force responsible for developing and maintaining strategic road connectivity along India’s western frontier.
The formation plays a crucial role in strengthening border infrastructure and enhancing military mobility in strategically sensitive areas.
Col Shikha Bhadauria Leads Project BEACON Formation
Earlier this year, Colonel Shikha Bhadauria took over command of 32 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), Project BEACON on 30 April 2026.
The formation is responsible for maintaining and improving strategic road connectivity in North Kashmir, including ensuring smooth movement and logistical support during the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, one of the country’s largest religious pilgrimages.
Strengthening Strategic Infrastructure
Both appointments underscore the critical role played by the BRO in developing and maintaining roads, bridges and other infrastructure in border and high-altitude regions, which are essential for both national security and civilian connectivity.
The organisation said the appointments reflect its continued focus on recognising merit and leadership irrespective of gender.
