Cairo/New Delhi: Egypt is reportedly evaluating India’s indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) as part of its efforts to modernise its long-range artillery capabilities. If approved, the acquisition would mark another significant milestone for India’s expanding defence exports and further strengthen the strategic defence partnership between New Delhi and Cairo.

Pinaka Emerges as Strong Contender

According to defence reports, Egypt is assessing the Pinaka MBRL as a cost-effective alternative to the US-made M142 HIMARS. The system has attracted attention due to its combination of long-range precision, rapid-fire capability and comparatively lower acquisition and operating costs.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Indian defence companies, Pinaka has become one of India’s flagship indigenous artillery systems.

Advanced Capabilities

The latest variants of the Pinaka system are capable of delivering precision strikes over extended ranges.

Key features include:

  • Rapid multi-rocket launch capability
  • Range of up to 120 km with the Long-Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) variant
  • High mobility and quick deployment
  • Precision-guided strike capability
  • Ability to engage multiple targets within a short time

The system has already been inducted into the Indian Army, where it significantly enhances long-range firepower.

Cost Advantage

One of Pinaka’s biggest advantages is its lower lifecycle and operational cost compared to several comparable Western rocket artillery systems, including HIMARS.

Analysts believe this makes the Indian system particularly attractive for countries looking to modernise their artillery without incurring the high costs associated with imported Western platforms.

Boost to India–Egypt Defence Cooperation

If Egypt proceeds with the purchase, it would represent another major step in the rapidly growing India–Egypt defence relationship, which has expanded significantly in recent years through military exercises, defence dialogues and industrial cooperation.

The potential deal would also reinforce India’s position as an emerging global supplier of advanced defence equipment under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Strengthening Defence Exports

The reported Egyptian interest comes as India continues to expand its defence exports across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Officials have repeatedly stated that indigenous platforms such as Pinaka, Akash, BrahMos, Tejas, and other home-grown systems are central to India’s goal of becoming a major global defence exporter.

While no final agreement has been announced, Egypt’s evaluation of the Pinaka system is being viewed as a significant endorsement of India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence technology and advanced artillery systems.
