Imphal, July 2: In a significant move signalling a tougher security approach in Manipur, the Government has reportedly vacated a camp previously occupied by the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and deployed personnel of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) at the site. The decision is being viewed as part of a broader effort to tighten oversight of insurgent groups operating under peace arrangements and standardise security management across the state.
UNLF Camp Handed Over to Security Forces
According to officials, the camp has now been brought under the control of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB), a specialised armed police force raised with the sanction of the Government of India. The move reflects the government’s decision to place designated camps under direct security supervision rather than allowing insurgent groups to retain operational control.
Officials have also directed that cadres of the UNLF be consolidated into officially designated locations, including Ingourok in Thoubal district and Kakching Khunou in Kakching district, to facilitate better monitoring and implementation of peace-related arrangements.
Part of Broader Security Reforms
The latest decision is being seen as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen law and order in Manipur following prolonged ethnic violence and continued security challenges in the state.
By consolidating insurgent cadres into officially monitored camps, authorities aim to improve accountability, reduce the possibility of unauthorised movement, and ensure greater compliance with the terms of ceasefire and peace agreements.
