New Delhi/Algiers, June 25: India and Algeria have agreed to significantly deepen bilateral defence cooperation during the inaugural meeting of the India-Algeria Joint Commission, marking a major step forward in strategic ties between the two countries. The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in defence, security, trade, energy, space and emerging technologies.
Defence Cooperation Takes Centre Stage
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf co-chaired the first Joint Commission Meeting, where both sides agreed to expand defence cooperation through enhanced military exchanges, defence-industrial collaboration, training programmes and capacity building. The leaders also discussed increasing cooperation in counter-terrorism, cybersecurity and maritime security.
Focus on Defence Industry Partnership
India highlighted its rapidly growing indigenous defence manufacturing sector and invited Algeria to explore opportunities in defence production, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), military equipment procurement and technology partnerships under the Make in India initiative. The discussions also covered cooperation in defence research and military training.
Expanding Strategic Partnership
Apart from defence, both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in hydrocarbons, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, digital public infrastructure, agriculture, space technology and scientific research. India and Algeria also committed to enhancing economic engagement and increasing bilateral trade.
Shared Commitment Against Terrorism
Both sides reaffirmed their strong commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and called for greater international cooperation against cross-border terrorism, terrorist financing and radicalisation. They also exchanged views on regional and global security developments, including the situation in West Asia and Africa.
Gateway to Africa
Algeria remains one of India’s important strategic partners in North Africa. The Joint Commission is expected to provide a structured mechanism to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors and strengthen India’s engagement with the African continent.
Officials said the meeting reflects the growing strategic convergence between New Delhi and Algiers as both countries seek closer cooperation in defence, security, economic development and regional stability.
