New Delhi, July 7: India and Australia have significantly expanded their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by signing 18 major agreements covering defence, civil nuclear cooperation, critical minerals, space, artificial intelligence, cyber security, education and clean energy. The agreements are aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in key strategic sectors amid the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific.

Civil Nuclear Cooperation

One of the most significant outcomes of the agreements is the expansion of civil nuclear cooperation, under which Australia will continue to support India’s civilian nuclear programme through the supply of uranium, reinforcing long-term energy security.

Strengthening Critical Mineral Supply Chains

Recognising the growing importance of critical minerals for clean energy and advanced manufacturing, both countries agreed to deepen cooperation on critical mineral exploration, processing and resilient supply chains. The partnership will also include advanced geological mapping and mineral exploration initiatives.

Defence and Maritime Security

India and Australia signed a new 2026 Defence and Security Cooperation Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening military cooperation and regional security.

The two countries also launched a Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap focused on enhancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific through joint exercises, information sharing and maritime domain awareness.

Boost for Defence Innovation

To encourage defence technology development, both sides agreed to establish a Defence Innovation Corridor, linking startups, research institutions and defence industries from both countries to jointly develop next-generation defence technologies.

AI, Cyber and Emerging Technologies

A major focus of the partnership is cooperation in emerging technologies. The newly launched AI-PACTS initiative will facilitate collaboration in artificial intelligence, cyber security and other critical technologies, strengthening digital resilience and technological innovation.

Space Cooperation

Space collaboration also received a significant boost, with Australia agreeing to provide tracking support from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands for ISRO’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, enhancing mission monitoring capabilities.

Skills and Clean Energy

The two countries also announced the establishment of a Rooftop Solar Training Academy, which aims to train 2,000 women and youth in solar energy technologies and green skills.

Additionally, agreements were signed to strengthen cooperation in vocational education, skill development and quality assurance, promoting workforce mobility and capacity building.

Strategic Significance

The comprehensive package of agreements reflects the growing convergence between India and Australia on issues related to defence, economic security, clean energy, critical technologies and the Indo-Pacific.

Officials from both countries described the agreements as an important step towards building a stronger, resilient and future-oriented partnership capable of addressing emerging regional and global challenges while promoting stability, innovation and sustainable economic growth.
