New Delhi, July 10: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that India is building what will be the world’s most modern Smart Border Security Grid, integrating cutting-edge surveillance and monitoring technologies to strengthen border management and counter emerging security threats.

The ambitious project aims to transform India’s border security architecture by deploying advanced technologies capable of providing round-the-clock monitoring, faster threat detection and improved situational awareness along sensitive frontiers.

Multi-Layered Surveillance Network

According to the Home Minister, the Smart Border Security Grid will incorporate several advanced technologies, including:

  • Anti-drone systems to detect and neutralise hostile unmanned aerial vehicles.
  • Advanced radar surveillance for continuous monitoring of border areas.
  • High-resolution cameras to enhance day-and-night surveillance.
  • Early warning systems capable of detecting suspicious movement and potential infiltration attempts.

These technologies will work together as an integrated network, enabling security forces to respond quickly to threats.

Boost to Border Security

The proposed smart surveillance grid is expected to significantly enhance India’s ability to prevent infiltration, cross-border smuggling, illegal crossings and drone-based threats.

Officials believe the technology-driven system will improve coordination among border guarding forces by providing real-time intelligence and a comprehensive operational picture of activities along the international border.

Focus on Emerging Threats

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the use of drones for smuggling weapons, narcotics and explosives, as well as increasing reliance on technology in border management worldwide.

By integrating artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance, advanced sensors and modern monitoring systems, India aims to build a next-generation border security framework capable of addressing both conventional and emerging threats.

Strengthening National Security

The Smart Border Security Grid is part of the Government’s broader effort to modernise India’s internal security infrastructure through the adoption of advanced technologies.

Once fully operational, the system is expected to strengthen border surveillance, improve operational efficiency and further enhance the country’s ability to safeguard its borders against evolving security challenges.
