New Delhi, July 1: Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra, AVSM, SM, on Tuesday assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the South Western Command, one of the Indian Army’s key operational commands responsible for safeguarding India’s western front.
A highly decorated Armoured Corps officer with over 37 years of distinguished military service, Lt Gen Malhotra succeeds Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, who has taken over as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff.
Veteran Armoured Corps Officer
Commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in June 1989, Lt Gen Malhotra has served in a wide range of command, staff and instructional appointments throughout his military career.
Before assuming command of the Jaipur-based South Western Command, he was serving as the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Command, where he played a key role in enhancing operational preparedness, organisational efficiency and force integration.
Extensive Operational Command Experience
Lt Gen Malhotra has commanded formations across some of the Indian Army’s most challenging operational theatres.
His command appointments include:
- Deployment on the Siachen Glacier
- Command of an Armoured Regiment

Leading One of India’s Key Operational Commands
Headquartered in Jaipur, the South Western Command (Sapta Shakti Command) is responsible for securing a large stretch of India’s western frontier and plays a crucial role in the Army’s operational preparedness along the border with Pakistan.
The command is central to India’s strike capability and regularly conducts major military exercises involving armoured formations, mechanised forces, artillery, aviation and integrated battle groups.
With his extensive operational, strategic and leadership experience, Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra is expected to further strengthen the command’s combat readiness, operational effectiveness and contribution to India’s national security objectives.
