New Delhi/Mumbai, July 14: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified a new Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court in Mumbai for the trial of all scheduled offences investigated by the NIA across Maharashtra.
According to the notification issued on July 11, 2026, Court Room No. 26 of the City Civil and Sessions Court, Mumbai, has been designated as the Special NIA Court under the provisions of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008.
Statewide Jurisdiction
The newly designated court will have jurisdiction over all NIA-investigated scheduled offences across the entire state of Maharashtra, ensuring that terror-related cases handled by the agency are tried at a single designated court.
The notification supersedes an earlier notification issued in 2019, making the new court the primary judicial forum for NIA cases in the state.
Decision Taken After Consultations
The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the designation was made in consultation with the Bombay High Court and the Government of Maharashtra, as required under the provisions of the NIA Act.
The move is aimed at streamlining the judicial process for terrorism and national security-related cases investigated by the premier anti-terror agency.
Role of Special NIA Courts
Special NIA Courts are established to ensure the speedy trial of offences related to terrorism, unlawful activities, organised crime, bomb blasts, terror financing, and other scheduled offences investigated by the National Investigation Agency.
These courts are empowered to conduct trials under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, and other applicable laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Strengthening the Anti-Terror Framework
Officials say the designation of the new Special NIA Court is part of the government’s continuing efforts to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for handling terrorism-related cases efficiently.
The new court is expected to hear all future NIA cases registered in Maharashtra, alongside ongoing matters transferred under the revised notification.
