Defence Minister Inaugurates ‘Sindoor Maharaktadan Yatra’ at Delhi Cantt; Athletes From Maharashtra Join Blood Donation Drive

New Delhi, August 9: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that Operation Sindoor sent a strong message to the world that India would go to any extent to protect the safety of its citizens while safeguarding the dignity of its people.

Addressing the ‘Sindoor Maharaktadan Yatra’ blood donation camp at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt, Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Armed Forces for their courage during Operation Sindoor and said the operation demonstrated India’s resolve to respond firmly to terrorism.

He said the operation showcased the valour of India’s defence forces and resulted in action against terrorists and their handlers based in Pakistan.

‘Operation Sindoor Showed Courage, Blood Donation Shows Compassion’

Drawing a parallel between the military operation and the blood donation campaign, Rajnath Singh said Operation Sindoor represented courage, while the mega blood donation drive represented compassion.

Around 1,000 wrestlers and athletes from Maharashtra participated in the campaign as donors, demonstrating solidarity with the Armed Forces and the spirit of selfless service.

The Defence Minister thanked all the participants and said the blood collected through the campaign would serve as an important reserve for soldiers and their families who may require transfusions in the future.

‘Blood Donation Is Jivandan and Mahadan’

Rajnath Singh described blood donation as ‘Jivandan’ and ‘Mahadan’, stressing that despite advances in medical science, there is still no artificial substitute capable of completely replacing human blood.

He said blood can ultimately be provided only by another human being, making voluntary blood donation one of the most valuable forms of service to society.

The Defence Minister urged citizens, particularly young people, to make voluntary blood donation a regular part of their lives.

Fitness and Service to the Nation

Calling upon India’s youth to prioritise physical fitness, Rajnath Singh said healthy and fit citizens are better positioned to contribute to society and undertake humanitarian initiatives such as blood donation.

He highlighted government initiatives including Khelo India and Fit India, saying these programmes encourage young people to adopt fitness as a way of life.

He also praised Maharashtra’s tradition of courage and compassion, invoking the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and saying that physical strength finds its true purpose in protecting others and serving the nation.

Blood Reserves Critical for Military Hospitals

For the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), maintaining adequate blood reserves is particularly important because military hospitals provide healthcare not only during routine medical requirements but also during operational emergencies, trauma cases and other contingencies.

The blood donation campaign therefore assumes special significance for the Armed Forces, helping strengthen the availability of blood for personnel and their families when urgently required.

Nearly 500 voluntary donors participated in the camp, reaffirming the Armed Forces’ ethos of ‘Service Before Self’.

Senior Military and Maharashtra Leaders Attend

The event was attended by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Minister of State for Ayush Pratap Rao Jadhav, Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Ravindra Samant, MP Dr Srikant Lata Eknath Shinde, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, DG Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Adjutant General Lt Gen VPS Kaushik and Commandant, Base Hospital Delhi Cantt Maj Gen Vishal Chaudhary, among other senior military and civil officials.

The event combined the themes of national security, fitness, patriotism and humanitarian service, with the organisers emphasising that every eligible citizen can contribute to saving lives through regular voluntary blood donation.
