Muzaffarabad, July 13: Large-scale protests were held across Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) on Sunday as thousands of residents demonstrated against the Pakistani administration, alleging political suppression, economic hardship and the excessive use of force by security agencies.
The demonstrations come amid growing public unrest and follow the reported collapse of talks between representatives of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and the Pakistan-backed administration over a series of long-standing demands.
Talks End Without Breakthrough
According to protest organisers, negotiations between the civilian protest movement and Pakistani authorities failed to produce an agreement, prompting the JAAC to intensify its agitation.
The committee has now announced a “Long March” to Muzaffarabad on July 15, calling on residents from across PoJK to converge on the regional capital.
Protesters Raise Multiple Demands
The demonstrators are demanding:
- Reduction in electricity tariffs.
- Affordable wheat flour and essential commodities.
- Greater political representation.
- Better governance and accountability.
- Relief from inflation and unemployment.
- An end to what they describe as excessive action by Pakistani security forces.
Protest leaders have accused the administration of ignoring public grievances despite months of demonstrations.
Security Tightened
Reports indicate that Pakistani authorities have significantly strengthened security across PoJK ahead of the planned march.
Additional deployments of Pakistan Rangers and Frontier Corps personnel have reportedly been made around Muzaffarabad and other sensitive locations amid concerns that the protests could intensify in the coming days.
Tensions Continue to Rise
The latest demonstrations reflect growing dissatisfaction among sections of the local population over governance, economic conditions and political rights.
With the July 15 Long March approaching and negotiations having failed, tensions are expected to remain high, with authorities preparing for a large mobilisation of protesters in Muzaffarabad.
